Faculty III - Process Sciences, Institute of Environmental Technology / Water Quality Control

Research Assistant - 0.75 working-time

About us

In a third-party funded research project, a research position is available for studying the transformation of trace organic compounds (TrOC, e.g. pharmaceuticals and iodinated contrast media (ICM)) under reducing aquifer conditions. Extensive laboratory studies are planned under controlled, defined conditions using oxidoreductases, as well as experiments with the use of material from the field and simulation of climate related changes. In a cooperation project at the Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB, Berlin; Dr. J. Lewandowski/Dr. St. Spahr), field studies are being carried out on this topic. The results of both projects will help to better understand the fate of trace organic compounds in the aquatic environment, especially under the rapidly changing climatic conditions, which also affect drinking water resources.

Your responsibility

  • Work on the DFG project "Transformation of trace organic compounds under reducing conditions: Importance of oxidoreductases"
  • Numerous laboratory studies on the transformation of TrOC by oxidoreductases under reducing conditions in a glovebox
  • laboratory studies on the transformation of TrOC using strong reduced sediments from the field and simulation of conditions due to climatic change (wet-dry cycles)
  • Data analyses and interpretation
  • Detection of transformation products (TP) and TP-balancing for ICM
  • Application and optimization of chemical-analytical methods (IC, LC-MS/MS)
  • Close cooperation with the IGB Ph.D. student
  • Publication of scientific results in international journals and at conferences
  • Supervision of student thesis related to this project

Your profile

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in environmental sciences, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry or a related field with good academic performance
  • First experience with scientific work in laboratories, e.g. through a practical master thesis
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills.
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry and interest in environmental processes
  • Ability to work in a team for close and continuous cooperation with IGB is desirable
  • Knowledge how to use a glovebox is desirable
  • Experience in the field of instrumental analysis (IC-UV, LC-MS/MS, HR-MS) is desirable
  • Independent, structured and result-oriented way of working is desirable
  • Driver's license class B or comparable is desirable
