Tasks

The DFG project "Mass transfer in dispersed liquid-liquid systems" investigates mass transfer between two immiscible liquid phases. The central hypothesis posits that interfacial conditions govern mass transfer. However, due to the small scale of the interface, characteristics such as enrichment or dimensions are not directly measurable through experiments. Therefore, a combined approach of experiments and a theoretical model is proposed to elucidate the interface and forecast mass transfer phenomena based on interfacial behavior for the first time. To implement this approach, extensive experimental work is underway to measure material properties and mass transfer on individual immobilized droplets using a novel experimental setup developed at the department. Acoustic levitation is utilized to immobilize the droplets, while optical methods ascertain mass transfer rates. The project is a collaboration with the research group of Prof. Zeiner at Graz University of Technology, which boasts expertise in modeling, particularly in interfacial phenomena. A theoretical model will be developed in close cooperation, leveraging insights gained from experimental results. Preparation of a PhD thesis is possible within the scope of this project.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have successfully completed advanced university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in process engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related engineering field with an excellent academic record
  • A strong understanding of process engineering, particularly in mass transport processes within liquid-liquid systems, is essential. Additionally, a solid foundation in acoustics and electrical engineering, coupled with an interest in experimental engineering research, is necessary
  • Candidates should possess experience with optical measurement techniques, data analysis, control engineering, and programming (especially MATLAB and LabView)
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills

Desirable:

  • Strong teamwork and organizational skills, along with curiosity, creativity, and the ability to work independently, are expected. Candidates should also demonstrate an eagerness to tackle new challenges
